December In Park City

light snow in early december at deer valley ski resort - park city utah usa

December 2011 was a fairly uneventful month. I landed a website job for the Silver Queen Fine Art Gallery in Park City, Utah, which took up a lot of my time. When I wasn’t working on their website, I was either out skiing at Deer Valley Resort (I got in 7 days of skiing before flying back to California on the 23rd), riding my motorcycle in the cold winter air, or pumping my mountain bike through several inches of snow on Park City’s various bike paths. I also went skiing with Caroline Gleich one day (and she made me realize that I still have a lot to work on) and spent a lot of time in front of the fireplace – reading a few books and doing some research for the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.

Skins UK (Seasons 1-5)

By DARREN ALFF on

the cast of seasons 3-4 of skins uk

The television show, Skins, is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Originally aired in the UK, the Skins franchise is now a television show on MTV in the USA and may be in several other countries around the world. The original Skins UK, however, is where it all began, and I spent countless hours this month watching seasons 1-5 of the show. While I found season 5 to be a bit weaker than seasons 1-4, the show as a whole is pretty darn remarkable. It is a difficult show to explain, and certainly not for everyone (as it contains lots of sex, nudity, violence, language, drinking, drugs, etc), but there are moments of genius littered throughout the series. Watch it and you’ll see what I mean!

Darren Alff's free Peru photo travel book from Peru

Today I released a free photo eBook titled “Mystical Peru”. The book is basically a compilation of my best/favorite photos from my travels in Peru earlier this year – with the photos organized by city/region. I took every single one of the photos in the book and am giving the book away for free. You can download “Mystical Peru” on this page.

Bridge Crossing

Park City bicycle bridge - professional cyclist Darren Alff

I rode the bus into town today and then slowly cycled my way home, stopping to do some errands and window shopping along the way. This long wooden bridge in the area directly across from the Canyons ski resort is one of my favorite areas to bike through in all of Park City. It was freezing cold on the bike ride, but I loved it because there was no one on the trails. I gotta get a few more rides like this in before the snow totally covers up all of the cycling paths.

Stretching For Cyclists - My New eBook

By DARREN ALFF on

Today I launched my new eBook – Stretching For Cyclists. It’s a short 31-page book that teaches cyclists how to stretch, when to stretch, and which stretches they should perform. I took the photos that are used throughout the book and did all the writing. My dad helped me with some of the anatomy/stretching information that is found within the text and my friend Caroline Gleich modeled each of the fifteen stretches that are featured in the book.

The Internet Is A Playground

David Thorne's hilarious book about the internet

I’ve been wanting to read David Thorne’s “The Internet Is A Playground” for more than a year now. I knew the book was going to be funny, but I had no idea just how funny it would be. After my sister gave me the book for my birthday, I read the entire thing in two days, often times laughing out loud and looking around the room for another person to share the stories with. The book is vulgar and mean in parts, boring and kinda lame in others, but it has its moments and overall is downright hilarious. Totally recommended.

Park City Howl-O-Ween 2011

By DARREN ALFF on

I went up to Main Street for the annual Park City Howl-O-Ween parade and festivities. There were a lot of good costumes there (on both the people and the dogs), but I didn’t feel like taking photos, so the only picture I’ve got worth sharing is this one here.
